EURO 2020 final may be held in Hungary instead of England

The 2020 UEFA European Championship final is scheduled to take place at Wembley Stadium on July 11, 2021, which will be exactly one month after the start of the tournament. Wembley will also welcome all of England’s group games and both semifinals.

Who will claim the title of Euro 2020 champion? Unfortunately, we are unable to predict who will unquestionably win the competition. The soccer betting fans will be able to find plenty of options with bets seeing all bookmaker offers available at the time. But, of course, the earliest odds for the probable winner were released by most bookies a long time ago.

UEFA may decide to transfer the final match to Budapest unless the British Government makes an exception for 2,500 VIP guests and allows them to stay without quarantine.

Last week, UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said that the UK government’s rules are too strict compared to those in the EU. So, for example, if you arrive in England from the countries of the “yellow” and “red” lists (and there is now almost the whole world), then you must isolate yourself for a 10-day quarantine. Then, of course, you can cut it, passing the test on the 4th day from arrival. And only visitors from the ten countries on the “green” list are free from quarantine.

Considering the current restrictions, the UEFA discusses several options and is willing to transfer the Euro 2020 Final to Budapest. Hungary will remove all restrictions for visitors from Schengen countries starting next week. Budapest is allowed to fill the stands at 100%. Wembley, with the capacity of 90 thousand people, is allowed to fill up to 50%.

At the same time, the UK government is discussing possible exceptions that can be made for UEFA and FIFA representatives, politicians, sponsors, reporters. The officials worry that concessions for such a large number of people may cause an increase in cases. Still, they are even more concerned about the possible transfer of the three most important matches of the tournament.

A scenario identical to this one occurred before the Champions League final. A similar situation has already happened before the Champions League final. However, the country’s Government and UEFA have not agreed on quarantine exceptions for sponsors, VIPs, and reporters. Therefore, the Champions League final was held in Porto.

The British Government was dissatisfied with the scenario and planned to avoid it from repeating in the case of the Euro final.
“We understand the pressures that the Government faces and hope to be able to reach a satisfactory conclusion of our discussions on the matter.
There is always a contingency plan, but we are confident that the final week will be held in London,” said the UEFA statement. Though UEFA is optimistic about Boris Johnson’s Government’s positive decision, Budapest is considered a backup alternative. Attendees will be required to provide either a valid Hungarian Immunity Card, which showed they were vaccinated or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of the event.
