Where Does Jose Mourinho Go Next?

Jose Mourinho has won every major trophy that there is in club football, but his reputation has taken a beating over recent seasons. His last league title came back in 2015; with the following season the slow decline of his powers.

Where Does Jose Mourinho Go Next

The 2015-16 season was disastrous for the Portuguese manager and his then-club Chelsea. They were defending champions, yet a record of nine losses in 16 meant that they lingered in mid-table and Mourinho was fired.

Manchester United was next to take a chance on Mourinho, and things started positively with League Cup and Europa League success in his first season. However, things quickly turned sour and the clubs worst ever start to a domestic season signalled the end. But, with United’s resurgence under new management and Real Madrid opting to re-appoint the younger Zinedine Zidane; where does Mourinho go next?

Portuguese National Side

The standout choice would be a crack at the national side. The FA always ensured Mourinho remained a favourite to be a future England manager, but that was when his relationship with the media was much stronger than now. Since Portugal is his homeland, it would be the obvious choice should he want to move into the international game.

However, his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo could be an obvious block in this plan, and the fact that he has continuously stated that he is still too young to manage a national side. Mourinho will one day lead the nation, but it will more than likely be after another job in club football. If you were to bet on football at NoviBet, this move wouldn’t be the desired selection for Mourinho’s next step.

Inter Milan

His best times as a manager came when he was in Italy with Inter Milan. The fans and players adored the Portuguese manager and were desperately sad to see him leave for Real Madrid in 2010. It was a trophy-glittered spell at the San Siro that saw back-to-back domestic titles between 2008 and 2010.

His crowning moment at the club came in the 2009-10 season, where Mourinho led Inter Milan to their first ever treble; this is still the only time that an Italian club has achieved this feat. Since his departure, the club has been on a steady decline with Milan only completing qualification for the Champions League last season for the first time in seven seasons.

Mourinho has continually said that his next club will need to give him the freedom to operate; in terms of the transfer market and backroom staff. Inter Milan would allow Mourinho the freedom of the city to get him back at the club.

Wolves

Their rise into the Premier League has been astounding, and under the guidance of Jorge Mendes as the clubs agent the calibre of players that have been brought in has not been at the standard that the club was at. As a Championship they were buying players with Champions League experience; something that was unheard of for a second-tier club.

With the links between Mendes and Mourinho, should the club go through a rough patch and a change in manager needed; the former Manchester United and Chelsea manager would be among the favourites to take charge. It remains unclear whether this move would interest Mourinho as it would be a step down from the level of clubs that he has most recently managed; however, it would allow him a chance to reinvent himself.
