Argentina and Saudi Arabia faced off today, 22 November, in the first-round World Cup group stage match. The teams played at the Lusail Iconic Stadium in Lusail. The starting whistle of the match was blown by chief referee Slavko Vinčić at 10:00 UK time.
Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia 1-2 in their first 2022 World Cup group-stage match. Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a penalty kick. The goal was the seventh of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s career at the World Cup.
Later, referee Slavko Vinčić cancelled out three more goals for the South Americans due to offside. In the entire first half, Lionel Scaloni’s team were caught offside seven times.
Early in the second half, the Saudis twice netted against Emiliano Martinez, with Al Shehri scoring in the 48th minute and Salem Al Dawsari in the 53rd.
Saudi goalkeeper Mohammed Alowais knocked out his defender Yasser Alshahrani with a knee at the end of the match. After being medically treated, the player was carried off on a stretcher.
